hi everybody
sorry in advance for the promotional content of this post, but i thought it might be of interest to some of you.
we have been posting this video on vimeo and got lots of interest and wanted to send some more information on the CDM board — http://www.vimeo.com/16323094
this (not yet launched) iOS App is made to address two specific issues:
one – music performance in the age of the “laptop musician”
two – digital/electronic music instruments and DAW control in the age of multi-touch
from our experience on both sides of the laptop (that is, performing musicians and audience) we found laptop performance to miss that impact that musicians used to have on stage. as nobody really knows “what is he doing there with his laptop”, playing, or just pushing “play”? checking his emails or firing samples? we felt it’s time to re-connect to the crowd and make the whole performance experience more engaging and the effort worthwhile, not to mention the price of the tickets ;)
and then came the iPhone and the stream of new music apps grew by the day. we could see the potential of using this platform to be used as a controller, but were literally shocked to see faders and knobs being repeatedly cloned from the old physical interfaces down to the flat, yet very powerful domain of the tablets.
so we came up with Konkreet Performer! and because it’s not out yet, i’m really dying to tell you how it is to work with:
the first thing you experience while working with KP is the good old magic of “happy accidents”. you CAN be precise with KP, but you choose not to. you’re playing around with graphical elements, getting a constant audial feedback and walking your way through in this whole new set of intuitive rules. totally new way to connect to your instruments.. imagine being able to change 20 control parameters at the same time! we found 4 groups of 2 to be the magic number though. with Kore2, for example, it automatically maps to the 8 available “knobs” of every sound you load! but really, the only limit is your imagination..
and, the whole thing is far from being a random control! it has this beautiful logic to it. something that riding a bike has. you’re not getting stuck thinking about it, you’re just doing it.
we are reaching sounds that would’ve been much harder to find by just manually tweaking knobs.
and.. it’s a whole lots of fun. you forget about the technology, synthesis, filters and envelopes. you just concentrate in the fun of riding your instruments.
thank you for your time.
love from Berlin
